with the inmates of the Penitentiary Institute of Lecce

What are our traces, our paths, what do we mark, and what trails of our history do we leave behind? This is the theme from which the Koreoproject team draws inspiration for their work with inmates inside the Penitentiary Institute of Lecce, titled “TRACCE” (which means “Traces” in Italian).

The term “traccia” usually denotes a mark, an imprint, or a path; leaving a trace of oneself is one of the aspirations of every human being. Passing into history, achieving lasting fame beyond the brief span of existence, entrusting one’s soul to the memory of posterity as a substitute for immortality…

Murakami wrote that everyone leaves their mark in the place they feel belongs to them the most. The space in which we live transforms in relation to our way of living, more or less marked, we leave traces of our presence through the consequences of our daily habits. Sometimes we forget that our very body is the representation of our history, it carries within it the traces of our past experiences. Like a geographical map, it indicates where experiences are located and what emotions are associated with them. Unlike “classic memory” that is activated by cognitive memories, bodily memory does so with actual physical memories, through sensations and physiological reactions.

That’s why our language, the language of movement, expresses the purity of our being. Through our artistic language, we will tell the stories of each participant, transforming them into traces of music and movement, and with the support of the art of sculpture, we will aim to ‘visualize’ our history and make it eternal. The languages of the performance develop through three thematic workshops: Music, Dance, Sculpture, during which the goal is to search for and discover a new vocabulary of movement, the musical and vocal abilities of the inmates, and introduce them to the world of sculpture.

The interest and educational priority, that is, the real theme to be developed, is the exploration of the inmates’ inner universe, a universe to discover and bring to light, in order to guide each of them to describe their own world in a personal way and make their vision universal and theatrical.
